            This particle is described in <ref target="../Tolkappiyam/TolC273.xml"><title xml:lang="ta">Tolkāppiyam Collatikāram</title> 273</ref> as a metrical filler going with the optative (<foreign xml:lang="ta">viyaṅkōḷ</foreign>). In the extant corpus, it is extremely rare, and in some cases it may be interpreted, alternatively, as the adjective <foreign xml:lang="ta">mā</foreign> in the sense of <q>big</q> or <q>dark</q>. Examples given by commentators on the <title xml:lang="ta">Tolkāppiyam</title> do not appear in extant poems, although one, <q xml:lang="ta">orkamā tōḻiyavar tērmaṇik kural</q>, may have been a variant reading on <ref target="../Narrinai/NA145.xml"><title xml:lang="ta">Naṟṟiṇai</title> 145</ref>, <q xml:lang="ta">varuvarō / vamma vāḻiyavar tērmaṇik kuralē</q>.

            Given its rarity, it is understandibly not mentioned in existing lexica. The <expan ref="#TL"/> defines it as <q>An expletive</q>, but unrelated to the optative; instead, it cites <ref target="../Narrinai/NA178.xml"><title xml:lang="ta">Naṟṟiṇai</title> 178</ref>, <q xml:lang="ta">mā tavat teḷinta</q>. In fact, commenting on <title xml:lang="ta">Tolkāppiyam Collatikāram</title> 273, <persName xml:lang="ta">Nacciṉārkkiṉiyar</persName> states that <foreign xml:lang="ta">mā</foreign> only <q>generally</q> (<foreign xml:lang="ta">perumpāṉmai</foreign>) goes with the optative, leaving scope for interpretation, although he is the only commentator, out of the four, to do so.
