<note xml:lang="en">The idea of <foreign xml:lang="ta">muṟṟil</foreign> as “small winnow” first comes up with this <expan ref="#Tev"/> passage, brought out by the translation of <expan ref="#VMS"/>. This notion is not frequent from the point of view of early poetic topoi. The formulaic motif to be expected in the context of girl’s games is <foreign xml:lang="ta"><w>ciṟṟ<c type="elided">u</c></w> il</foreign>, the well-known toy houses built in the sand. However, confirmation comes both from <title xml:lang="ta">Periyāḻvār Tirumoḻi</title> and <title xml:lang="ta">Periya Tirumoḻi,</title> where we find other enumerations of playful occupations pursued by little girls, and this time <foreign xml:lang="ta">muṟṟil</foreign> comes in <foreign xml:lang="ta">etukai</foreign> with <foreign xml:lang="ta">ciṟṟil</foreign>. The connection with the winowing fans is also indirectly backed up by the <foreign xml:lang="ta">nikaṇṭu</foreign>-s, as there <foreign xml:lang="ta">muṟṟil</foreign> appears together with other words for a winnowing fan (<foreign xml:lang="ta">cuḷaku</foreign> and <foreign xml:lang="ta">muṟam</foreign>), united by the fact that all three can function as a designation of a day, <foreign xml:lang="ta">vicākam</foreign>.</note></sense>
