The idea of muṟṟil as “small winnow” first comes up with this passage, brought out by the translation of . This notion is not frequent from the point of view of early poetic topoi. The formulaic motif to be expected in the context of girl’s games is ciṟṟu il, the well-known toy houses built in the sand. However, confirmation comes both from Periyāḻvār Tirumoḻi and Periya Tirumoḻi, where we find other enumerations of playful occupations pursued by little girls, and this time muṟṟil comes in etukai with ciṟṟil. The connection with the winowing fans is also indirectly backed up by the nikaṇṭu-s, as there muṟṟil appears together with other words for a winnowing fan (cuḷaku and muṟam), united by the fact that all three can function as a designation of a day, vicākam.
