All six early occurrences, including those from the two oldest <foreign xml:lang="ta">Peruṅkāppiyam</foreign>-s, form part of a miniature formulaic system that describe the ears of an elephant – the quoted <expan ref="#Kali"/> passage breaks up the formula and relegates the missing <foreign xml:lang="ta">yāṉai</foreign> to the end of line 4. It is only the <expan ref="#Tev"/> passage that allows a more direct understanding of what the object is used for. Of course modern dictionaries distinguish <foreign xml:lang="ta">cuḷaku</foreign> and <foreign xml:lang="ta">muṟam</foreign> both by form and by size, but from the available attestations one may wonder whether <foreign xml:lang="ta">cuḷaku</foreign> was used as a piece of kitchen equipment in food production while <foreign xml:lang="ta">muṟam</foreign> served other extended household purposes.

<note xml:lang="en">
Unlike <foreign xml:lang="ta">cuḷaku</foreign>, <foreign xml:lang="ta">muṟam</foreign> is glossed by an early commentator, namely as <foreign xml:lang="ta">cuḷaku</foreign> (p.u. on <expan ref="#Cila"/> 10.247).
